Stoicism is an ethical school of thought founded by Zeno during the Hellenistic Period.

Stoicism prioritizes virtue, claiming that virtue is the highest good, and that virtue is developed through reasoning. Therefore, the stoics advocated for emotional self-control and rationality, claiming that it is only through reasoning and temperance can we reach our highest ethical life since we cannot concern ourselves with external things we can’t control.

Stoicism became popularized again with Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.
