Every hangout always starts with some variation of “so what have you been up to lately?”, and every time I find myself frantically flipping through the past week trying to conjur up some memory of anything interesting I did. And I do find this troubling to some extent. Not just for the awkward silence after the customary question, but also because how am I supposed to build upon my past lessons if I can’t even remember what I made for dinner last night? I tried daily journaling, but I find it too granular to ever want to look back through it. And I still need to figure out what to update my friends on damn it!

So welcome to my retros - a weekly space where I share what’s been happening, what I’ve been thinking about, and anything cool I’ve discovered along the way.

Here are some reasons why I’ve chosen to do this:

  1. Something I’ve learned as I’ve gotten more into creation is that stories don’t always come out of interesting things happening, but from picking out the interesting things from mundane life. This gives me the opportunity to make a habit out of this story-making.
  2. The weekly cadence will hopefully make going through my past experiences less overwhelming than parsing through every single daily journal entry.
  3. Publishing lets me update my friends (especially my long distance besties) of my recent happenings. Or at the very least gives me some ammunition for our next conversation.
  4. I really love pondering random philosophical or introspective topics, but I feel a little intimidated sometimes to turn them into full blown essays - so I’ll sow them here in their delicious half-baked beauty until I do (or don’t) muster up the courage to formalize them.
